as i was leading all the horses out to run
slowed down
when i caught an inflammation of the lung
and i know now
i wasn’t offering myself in whole
to anything or anyone
undesiring fire
if any closer than my own
nightly lightning
i would watch it wide-eyed in my boat
cliffside calling
i had never felt so close
and yet so far from home
will you come 'round
i am leading all the horses to the pond
look deep and see how
the water and the earth have formed
a gorgeous mud
and i’ll dive down
gathering what i can
but feel the water take it back
as i swim up

I dream of horses every night
